Who We Are

Our Story and Vision

Rickshaw Collective was founded in 2023 by rickshaw runners with the vision of creating a sustainable social enterprise that brings culture to the city’s vibrant atmosphere, contributes to the local economy and businesses and adds an eco-friendly thrilling “transpor-tainment” experience. The rickshaw service and business model was optimized and modernized with an employee-first vision

Rickshaw Collective stems from generations and decades of previous rickshaw companies, from the 1990’s, 2000’s and 2010’s

Rickshaw Collective is represented by the amazing individuals that run rickshaws. In return the collective provides a flexible, high income, fun and rewarding employment to the runners. The runners are employees but considered members of the collective.

Community Impact

Rickshawing is made possible by the community. The people that go for rides and the people cheering them on is what creates the rickshaw magic. Therefore the Collective aims to give back to the community by partnering with local organizations and charities.

History of the Rickshaw

The name “rickshaw” originates from the Japanese word “jinrikisha” (人力車), which translates to “human-powered vehicle” (jin = human, riki = power, sha = vehicle). This term aptly described the earliest hand-pulled rickshaws that emerged in Japan in the late 1800’s as an innovative form of transportation for individuals seeking an efficient and affordable way to travel.

Rickshaws quickly spread to other parts of Asia, becoming a defining feature of urban life in countries like China, India, Bangladesh, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Each region embraced the rickshaw and adapted it to local cultures and needs, often incorporating unique designs and technologies. Pedicabs (bicycle rickshaws) and motorized tuk-tuks emerged as modern alternatives, providing faster and more efficient transportation options. Today, rickshaws remain an iconic symbol of transportation across Asia, blending tradition, innovation, and accessibility.

In the 80 – 90’s, rickshaws began appearing in Canada and notably in Halifax, introduced as a novel way to experience the scenic charm of the city. Over time, hand-pulled rickshaws evolved to prioritize entertainement, accessibility, and sustainability. Today, modern adaptations like those at Rickshaw Collective combine traditional charm with modern innovations, offering an inclusive, human-powered way to experience the city while honoring the rickshaw’s rich cultural heritage and legacy.
